Lucy Goes Back

Lucy Goes Back To:
Iceland

Lucy loved her travels so much last year that she decided that she wanted to revisit some of the countries, learn more about them and see things that she missed last time. So in January she flew back to Iceland to see it in the snow and she is now starting a cycle ride around the Netherlands.

Iceland - January  2018

She spent the Autumn planning her new trip to Iceland, made herself an Icelandic hat and re-read her Icelandic books. She booked a flight and flew to Reykjavík in January. She loved the flight and landing in the snow.

This was about 10 seconds before we landed. All you could see was snow and no sign of the airport or runway.

Snow, Darkness and The Northern Lights

It was a fabulous, action packed week. It snowed most days, got light about 11.30 in the morning and was dark again by 3.30, so most of the time was spent in darkness, but it was wonderful.

I went on some trips in a four wheel-drive truck well off the main route, on ice/packed single track roads. We hardly saw any other vehicles for several hours. I walked along snow covered cliffs, stood on a snowy beach watching dolphins, walked on a glacier, went down a cave deep under the lava fields, and swam at night in remote thermal lagoons. Incredible, floating on your back, looking up at the stars, with snow covered mountains all around.

I was pleased that I was able  to meet up with Dagmar, who I met last  Summer, and she took me on some great adventures. We also went for a traditional Icelandic meal at a family run restaurant out in the countryside. And she managed to find a good spot to see to see the Northern Lights.

I have hundreds of photos, but these give an idea of the beauty, the remoteness, and the setting or rising sun. The sun was so low in the sky, that some days the sky was pink all day. It was well worth going back in the middle of winter, but you need to wrap up warm and I was very glad to have some good snow boots.

When we got home, Lucy immediately started to plan for the Summer cycle ride. This time she wanted to go back to the Netherlands and spent the rest of the Winter pouring over maps, reading guide books and learning Dutch. She booked the ferry to leave in May, knitted herself an orange Dutch jumper and painted her clogs orange. You can read about her new adventures as they happen in new posts on this blog.
